Braums wanted to expand its product offering and use its technology expertise gained from Traffic Lighting and LED technology to compete in a highly regulated and competitive market space to produce a disruptive design to comply to AS/NZA-1158 Pedestrian Area and Minor Road (Category P) LED Street Lights. The Design Challenge was to design and engineer the ‘best’ P Category LED Street Luminaire from scratch within Australia to compete with long established reputations of existing overseas brands.

Public Street Lighting is highly regulated because it uses input voltages of 230-240VAC and high-powered LEDs. Safety to installers and the public is of the highest priority. The PX Luminaire has been designed from the out set to comply with Australian Pedestrian Area and Minor Road (Category P) requirements AS/NZA-1158. All lighting certifications and IP ratings have been also attained. The R&D program was a short two-year exercise. Understanding current competitors weakness and user’s needs, functionality, work practises and industry standards has allowed Braums to create a no fuss, simple, user-friendly customisable design at a very competitive price. The final product design solved all the technical requirements mandated by Industry Standards and merged them into a well balanced aesthetically pleasing solution.

The Braums PX Luminaire having been designed for easy assembly with integrated over centred latches for both the Lens and Hatch and tool-less assembly of the LED PCB, by default allows the product to also be easily disassembled. The use of aluminium pressure die-casting for the body and door provides for a very robust product and keeps the overall weight down. The PX utilises high performance and reliable CREE LEDs for its light source on an aluminium PCB. The PCBA is kept cool by dissipating the heat built up through the aluminium cast body by a hidden internal heat sink system extending the life of the LEDs. The integrated styling of all the features together provides a simple visual aesthetic to blend into any urban street-scape.
