Cabcharge Meter

When Cabcharge, one of the world's leading payment companies, set out to develop the next generation of taxi meters they engaged D+I to create a class-leading device. This was an opportunity to combine our product development and user interface design expertise to create a device with a seamless user experience — unlike anything used in a taxi before.

The taxi meter console is an innovative and powerful payment and application platform developed to meet the stringent requirements and rigours of the taxi industry. The console provides detailed information about the fare including travel routes, automated toll calculation, online and offline processing of payments and receipt printing. 

User interface design.

When developing the user interface design we set out to reconnect travel, time and money with motion — the way it was done originally using mechanical counters — so we made the numbers rotate like old counter wheels. We also wanted to make it easy to identify when the meter was in one of its three main states; running, paused or stopped. We chose to mimic traffic light colours to clearly indicate the changing states.
