Lion Beer Tower Taps
Lion’s beers can be found, served to perfection, in almost every pub, club and hotel in Australia — from these taps Publicans and Bartenders serve their choice ranges of Australian Classic, Craft + International beers to the thirsty public. Lion Nathan engaged IDEO to undertake the product research and an in-depth round of user testing (voice of the customer) to determine the product realisation strategy. D+I was approached by Lion Nathan to develop a new design for their beer tower tap dispensers - The challenge was to enhance the presentation + desirability of their beer portfolio at the point-of-sale in partner venues. The experience goes like this: Patrons enter the venue and gravitate towards to the main bar. Patrons quickly scan the line-up of beers looking for their favourite, the latest craft brews, or to confirm they still serve the classic - Tooheys New. For Lion a successful new beer tower + tap design (POS) needed to compliment and elevate the choices + delivery experience for patrons.
The Perfect Choice + Pour. Every time.
We started by exploring + ordering Lions portfolio of beers, we looked at partner venues (interior + styling trends), the diversity of patrons + how they choose, and watched Publicans and Bartenders at the helm serving up the nectar. After exploring the Beer Tower, Chamber, Pipes + Taps over several iterations, factoring in ergonomics and glass manufacturing processes, we took inspiration from the colour, cloud and breweries of Lion Beers. All premium styling finishes referencing the craft beer boom, copper finishes, industrial faucets, simple top chamber pressure valve + dark wood beer tap handles. Seeing the cold beer, tint, fizz + drips drives anticipatory excitement — the refined ‘Tinnie-Inspired’ Chamber amplifies this excitement before the beer starts pouring + assists patrons in making a selection.
Lion Beer Kettle
When D+I was approached by Lion Nathan to elevate the design of the glassware used to serve their range of craft beers, we immediately headed to the pub to conduct an in-depth round of user testing. For Lion, a successful design would need to have a recognisable form that compliments and enhances the craft-beer drinking experience. After exploring the Jug's form over several iterations, factoring in ergonomics and glass manufacturing processes, we took inspiration from the traditional copper kettles used in the beer brewing process. Flaring the jug's neck allowed D+I to incorporate our custom-designed beer glasses using an innovative stacking set-up. This allows users to carry the jug, and several glasses, with just one hand, while being spill and drip resistant ensures users can enjoy every drop.
